About me

writing garden

I am an experienced and qualified native English translator (Italian – English), with a BA (Hons) in Italian from the University of Bristol, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Translation Studies from the University of Manchester. My Erasmus year (2003) was spent at the well-known Scuola Superiore di Lingue Moderne per Interpreti e Traduttori, University of Bologna (Forlì), where I honed my translation skills and decided to pursue the study of translation at Postgraduate level. During my postgraduate study I specialized in the translation of culturally-bound humour, crossing boundaries through literature, subtitling, and the translation of opera surtitles.

Recent translation testimonial: “She is super fast, she delivers high quality translation and she goes beyond the task when needed with no necessity to ask. Highly recommended.”
Maurizio La Cava, Author of Lean Presentation Design, 3rd May, 2016.

Technical Authorship
I am a qualified Technical Author with over 5 years of experience writing and editing User Documentation in the Semiconductor industry. I have a certificate in Technical Communication and a Diploma in Technical Authorship (both with distinction). I have also completed a course in STE – Simplified Technical English – so you can be confident that the target text will read well according to the industry standard, with more chance of it being understood by those for whom English is not the first language. Here are two articles I have written for the Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators about the world of Technical Authorship:

Creative Writing
I am an experienced Creative Writer. I have completed 2 modules in Creative Writing at the Open University, both gaining Distinctions. I am soon to complete my final module, Exploring English Grammar, after which I will gain a BA (Hons) in English and Creative Writing. I have poetry published in The Seventh Quarry, Roundyhouse journal, Hysteria Anthology, and The Emma Press, and recently read my poem at the launch party of Emma Press’s Slow Things Anthology in London in July 2015. I was one of the judges of the Hysteria Women’s Writing competition, and was longlisted for the Mslexia Poetry Competition 2016. My piece about living in Italy, called Spoonful of Sugar, was published on Surviving in Italy blog.

I have written guest posts for high-traffic blogs and worked as a ghost writer for Warlock Media. I have been a volunteer staff writer for Translators Without Borders, and have written marketing material for a number of sites including Karizma Photography. An example of content writing can be found here: Please Do Not Feed The Animals, Chucktown Magazine.

Travel Writing:
I am a regular freelance travel writer for Looking for Italy where I get to talk about how amazing Italy is. Here is an article about why you should shut your computer down and book a flight to Naples right now. I also document my own travels on my creative writing site: www.lucyrosewilliams.com

Write Club
I was founding Secretary and am now currently Art Director of The Open University Writing Society. As secretary my role involved presenting and showcasing the new society at The Open University Societies day. My current role involves designing the visual output, managing various social media channels, critiquing work in the forum, looking for authors to showcase, and attracting news members.

I’m founder of tipsy bookclub Reading Between the Wines. It does what it says on the tin.

I am on the committee for Honno, a Welsh Women’s Press, and get to be involved in discussing brand updates, proofreading, and reading manuscripts to help the Commissioning Editor decide books for publication. I represented them at Hay Literary Festival 2016 for New Welsh Review’s ‘New Welsh Travel Writing’ Award and will soon be looking after theit bookstall at the Tenby Book Fair.
